Pandanus comprises 700 species around the world such as in Africa, Madagascar, some Islands in the Indian Ocean, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Burma, Taiwan, Japan, and so on. Pandanus usually occurs in tropical sea coasts, sandy beaches, coastal thickets, and on the edges of marshes and mangroves, and inland along rivers with less widespread at higher altitudes.
The fragrant leaves are commonly used in the cuisines of Southeast Asia and South Asia as flavorings. In the local language, Pandanas leaves are known as rampé and are grown in almost every household. Most Sri Lankan dishes, along with curry leaves, use these leaves for flavor. The leaves are used either fresh or dried and these leaves are also commercially available in frozen form in Asian grocery stores internationally where the plant does not grow.
It is also said to have flavonoids which are believed to have a variety of healthful properties, such as an antiviral, anti- allergen, antiplatelet, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties.
